Part V — Casual & Contemporary Styles
Chapter 27: Cargo Trousers
Cargo trousers are distinguished not primarily by leg silhouette but by a defining structural feature: large, often pleated or gusseted utility pockets, typically positioned along the outer thigh, originally designed for military and workwear functionality.
Origins in Military and Workwear
Cargo trousers derive directly from 20th-century military uniform design, where large thigh pockets allowed soldiers to carry maps, ammunition, and equipment without needing a separate bag. The style crossed into civilian workwear and eventually mainstream fashion in the latter half of the 20th century.
Defining Construction Features
Beyond the signature thigh pockets — which may be flat patch pockets, expandable bellows/gusseted pockets, or pleated pockets with a flap closure — cargo trousers often include additional utility details: reinforced knee panels, adjustable hem drawstrings or tabs, and heavier-weight, abrasion-resistant fabric (Chapter 15), typically a sturdy cotton or cotton-nylon twill.
Silhouette Variation
Cargo trousers can be cut across the full silhouette range introduced in Chapter 9 — contemporary cargo styles range from slim tapered cuts to deliberately oversized, wide-leg interpretations, with the pocket detailing remaining the consistent, defining feature across all of them.
Styling Considerations
Because the thigh pockets add visual volume and horizontal detail to the upper leg, cargo trousers interact somewhat differently with the proportion principles discussed in Chapter 10 than a plain-front trouser of the same silhouette — the pocket detail itself functions as a volume element, meaning even a slim-cut cargo trouser can read as more casual and visually busy through the thigh than an equivalent plain trouser.
Practical Note: Fully loading cargo pockets with bulky items changes the trouser's silhouette in real time — a consideration worth factoring in for cargo trousers intended for genuine utility use rather than purely decorative pocket detailing.
